Its important to note that some persons carry out their own air
monitoring and subsequently send the samples to a NATA Accredited
Laboratory for fibre counting.
This is in breach of the NATA requirements and the
Victorian Asbestos Regulations 2007.
They (the person who carried out the monitoring and the lab)
cannot issue a NATA endorsed test report which also complies with
the requirements of the Victorian Asbestos Regulations
2007.
Equipment and instruments used for the air monitoring such as
the air monitoring pumps must have 'in current year' calibration
labels attached.
For the legal chain of custody of the samples and the records
associated with those samples, the following must be complied
with;
Asbestos air monitoring must (by law) only be carried out by a
NATA Accredited laboratory, in compliance with the following;
- NATA Rules
- NATA Field Application Document
- SWA (former NOHSC) Guidance Notes 2005
- Victorian OH&S Regulations 2007
- WorkSafe Victoria - Removing Asbestos In Workplaces Compliance
Code 2008
- WorkSafe Victoria
- Managing Asbestos In Workplaces Compliance Codes 2008
- AS/IEC/ISO Laboratory Standard 17025 Quality Management
System.
Single use bar coded filter cassettes are used for a more
efficient chain of custody, for the air monitoring samples and
associated records.
